(GRANITE CITY, Ill.) — The Mississippi River was closed for about 24 hours after a barge struck and damaged the lock system at Granite City, the Belleville News-Democrat newspaper reported. The Army Corps was able to make temporary repairs to Lock No. 27 — one of the river's busiest — so the closure only lasted a day, with 100 barges awaiting passage. Permanent repairs will be planned later.
