Union Local 333 waging battle to preserve deckhand jobs

(STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.) — The union representing tugboat crews in New York Harbor is trying to stop vessel operators from cutting one deckhand from each crew, the Village Voice newspaper reported. A strike against Kosnac Tug has now lasted 10 weeks. Local 333 of the United Marine Division of the International Longshoremen’s Union says reducing the number of deckhands is an unsafe practice, but the company says non-union operators are doing it and feels the strike is a vendetta on an unrelated matter.
