U.S. ‘ghost fleet’ in Virginia disposes of its 75th vessel

(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) — The 75th ship to leave the U.S.’s so-called “ghost fleet” is the tanker Truckee, the Virginian-Pilot newspaper reported. The tanker was pressed into refueling service during the Cuban Missile Crisis but has been idle since 1994. The U.S. Maritime Administration has quickened the pace of disposals in the James River Reserve Fleet. The Truckee will be broken into scrap metal at a yard in Chesapeake.
