Sunken BC tug lifted from rocks, loaded on barge

Nathan E Stewart Diesel Spill From Tug Near Bella Bella

(BELLA BELLA, British Columbia) — A tugboat that grounded a month ago along the Central Coast, leaking an estimated 26,000 gallons of fuel, was lifted off the rocks Monday and placed on a barge, CBC News reported. Nathan E. Stewart ran aground and sank 32 days ago west of Bella Bella, but attempts to remove the Kirby tug were hampered by stormy weather and strong tides. The incident has refocused concerns about oil spill response capacity on the West Coast, with British Columbia Premier Christy Clark calling the response "inadequate" and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau calling the situation "unacceptable."
