Oldest operating ship on Great Lakes being converted into barge

(CHICAGO) — St. Marys Challenger, the 107-year-old, 562-foot freighter that was the oldest vessel operating on the Great Lakes, is being converted into a barge, the Chicago Tribune reported. There had been speculation among the ship's fans that it would be retrofitted, but that proved to be too expensive its owner. The estimate for repairs and upgrades ran to about $20 million.
