OCEAN TUG & BARGE ENGINEERING CORP. “FACETTUG” DESIGN DELIVERED

RUTH M REINAUER

Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering Corp.’s new “FacetTug•bCrLf AT/B ocean tugboat RUTH M REINAUER has been delivered by SENESCO MARINE of North Kingstown, RI, to Reinauer Transportation of Staten Island, NY. The 4000 BHP tug and its’ sister being built presently, will push a 100,000 bbl capacity OPA-90 compliant ocean tank barge, also built by SENESCO for Reinauer.

The FacetTug tm is the latest innovative tug design from Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering Corp., a long established firm whose focus is AT/B, or Articulated Tug/Barge design. The new tug, equipped with the INTERCON connection system, measures 116′ in length, 35′ in beam, powered by twin MTU 16V-4000 series main engines, for a total of 4,000 BHP. The tug features an OT&BE-developed hull design that is composed of a series “facet•bCrLf shaped cuts, all planar. This creates a hull with no curvature, making it simple to build and capable of being fabricated on panel lines.

Robert P. Hill, the President of Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering Corp., says that the new FacetTug tm class design was a direct response to an industry need for a tug design for AT/B service that was adaptable to any connection system, yet was simple to build and outfit. “This hull was developed originally for our soon-to-be released “Provider Class•bCrLf AT/B platform supply vessel design. The Provider Class clients were asking us to design an AT/B tug capable of being built worldwide in smaller shipyards that may lack the ability to work with more complex shapes. For Reinauer, the people were in place to build a more complex, curved hull, but there was a need to build the tug swiftly to match a barge delivery as closely as possible. So after discussions with the shipyard, and Reainauer, the decision was taken to work with the FacetTug tm design and it has proven to be an exceptionally good decision. ”

Three of Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering Corp’s ATLANTIC II class AT/B tugs, which are 124 • x 40′, with a full forecastle have been built for Reinauer to date, as well as three conversions of existing tugs to AT/B tugs. The most recent, the CRAIG ERIC REINAUER, went to work only a few weeks before the RUTH. A fourth is being started now, the TIMOTHY REINAUER, from the same design utilized for the conversion of the MORGAN. Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering Corp., was founded in 1993, and is located in Milford, MA. The firm has had a hand in either the design or refit engineering of dozens of the AT/B’s operational or under design in the United States. The firm has recently expanded into the International arena, with contracts for two overseas customers. The firm’s President is the co-inventor of the INTERCON system, but the firm designs AT/B’s using all popular AT/B connection systems.
