Vessels in N.C. maritime graveyard undergoing historical study

(EAGLES ISLAND, N.C.) — Archaelologists and historians are beginning to document more than 30 vessels that have been abandoned in a maritime graveyard at Eagles Island, the Star News newspaper of Wilmington reported. The researchers say mapping the old tugs, barges and steamers is like tracing the history of seafaring at the Wilmington port. One historian said the “junk” could even be incorporated as an historical exhibit within a likely condominium project expected for the area.
