Merchant Marine captain says maritime life helped him beat drugs

(WAUKEGAN, Ill.) — A Merchant Marine captain says his maritime career helped him overcome a life of drug addiction and crime, the Lake County News Sun newspaper reported. Capt. Mark Stevenson is one of only two black Merchant Marine masters sailing on the Great Lakes between the U.S. and Canada. He now skippers the former Coast Guard cutter Acacia, which is being transformed into a museum ship on the Chicago waterfront.
