Mariners begin obeying new slow-down rule off South Carolina

(CHARLESTON, S.C.) — Commercial mariners and the Charleston Branch Pilots’ Association have begun slowing their vessel’s down off South Carolina to obey a new rule protecting migrating right whales, the Post and Courier newspaper reported. Beginning Tuesday, vessels longer than 65 feet must slow to 11.5 mph within 23 miles of the coast. That’s about half-speed for a containership.
