Major lock repairs shut down Columbia, Snake rivers for 14 weeks

(PORTLAND, Ore.) — A $45 million lock maintenance project will shut down the upper Columbia and Snake rivers for 14 weeks, the Oregonian newspaper reported. The disruption to navigation started this week. Operators include Tidewater Barge Lines and Shaver Transportation Co. are ready because they had a year to prepare for the closure. Some layoffs are occurring while there’s no way to navigate commercial vessels up the river system.
