Irving plans layoffs, upgrades at Halifax shipyard

(HALIFAX, Nova Scotia) — The Irving shipyard is planning a $300 million modernization that will result in the company laying off an unspecified number of employees, Metro Halifax reported. The demolition of some structures has already begun, with upgrades scheduled to be completed in time for work to begin on the first set of navy ships ordered under a contract with the federal government. The company received a $260 million loan from the provincial 
government last year for the project.
