IMO sets 0.5 percent global sulfur cap for 2020

(LONDON) — The International Maritime Organization's Marine Environment Protection Committee agreed Thursday to implement a 0.5 percent global sulfur cap on marine fuel in 2020, The Motorship reported. The industry now has just over three years to decide on compliance measures — either low-sulfur fuel, the installation of exhaust scrubbers, or the use of alternative fuels including liquefied natural gas. Some countries wanted to delay implementation until 2025 due to doubts about sufficient availability of low-sulfur fuel for 2020.
