Coast Guard’s Allen named top U.S. official in spill response

(NEW ORLEANS) — The federal government is trying out strategies to staunch the Deepwater Horizon spill that have never been used before, Time magazine reported. Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen has been named the top U.S. official in charge of the spill response. In a first-time experiment, chemical dispersants are being used at the site of the leaking wellhead, and crews plan to construct a dome over the leak to channel the escaping crude oil to a ship.
