The following is the text of a press release issued by the U.S. Coast Guard:

(COAST GUARD ACADEMY, Conn.) — Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad Allen is scheduled to deliver the keynote speech during the Coast Guard Academy’s 129th Commencement Exercises May 19 at 11 a.m. on Cadet Memorial Field.

Allen is currently serving as National Incident Commander for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill response. Wednesday’s graduation will be Allen’s final chance to speak with cadets about his legacy as commandant and the current and future challenges to the Coast Guard before he retires May 25.
Eight Connecticut cadets will be among the 196 who will receive their Bachelors of Science degrees in one of eight majors and commissions as ensigns during Wednesday’s ceremony.

After four years of academics, physical fitness, character and leadership, these newly commissioned ensigns will apply their rigorous education for the next five years to carrying out the 11 Coast Guard missions in various units around the country.
