College students develop ‘wireless waterways’ system for towboats

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) — Carnegie Mellon University students have invented a system that will help towboat crews communicate better with lock tenders, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review newspaper reported. The so-called “wireless waterways” concept could reduce vessel congestion at the locks. The Port of Pittsburgh Commission is seeking funding to try it out.
