Alaska’s Marine Highway System: Slowly backing away from the brink

Dating back to 1959, Alaska’s ferry system has grown to serve much of the 3,500 miles of coastline connecting Bellingham, Wash., with Dutch Harbor in the Aleutians and 30 more communities in the state’s far northwest.
