Wilh. Wilhelmsen, Callenberg Technology receive SHIPPINGInsight Award

(STAMFORD, Conn.) — The 2015 SHIPPINGInsight Award was presented to Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA and Callenberg Technology Group today at the SHIPPINGInsight 2015 Fleet Optimization Conference & Exhibition in Stamford, Conn.

The award is presented annually to honor a shipping company and its technology partners for the successful implementation of an innovative technology or initiative that advanced the state of the art in fleet optimization. The award winners each received a binnacled captain’s clock in a polished wooden case as well as framed certificates.

Callenberg developed an innovative engine room energy management technology solution for Wilh. Wilhelmsen that reduced wasted energy through capacity-driven control and management of engine room ventilation systems. The Callenberg technology alters the ventilation and combustion air supply to meet the demand of fresh air to the engine room. It also varies the seawater pumps to the actual cooling demand of the diesel engine at any given time. When in port and when operating in colder waters, the system provides maximum energy savings during slow steaming. The system reports the energy savings, enabling operators to benchmark and analyze the return on investment. Wilh. Wilhelmsen projects a total savings of 900,000 kWh in electricity in the first year.

A certificate of merit also went to Royal Caribbean Cruises and Veritas Petroleum Services.

“We instituted the SHIPPINGInsight Award to recognize achievements in fleet optimization and ship operating efficiency, as a way of helping to stimulate creative innovations and deployment of new technologies in ship operations,” said SHIPPINGInsight co-director Jim Rhodes.
