US files suit after tugboat damages undersea cable

(HONOLULU) — The U.S. Justice Department is calling for the seizure and sale of the tugboat Maulani, which snagged an undersea cable and shut down Pearl Harbor's electronic security system, Courthouse News Service reported. A lawsuit filed last week claims that Maulani and four smaller tugs were towing a radar station back into the harbor in 2013 when Maulani's master diverged from the voyage plan, causing its tow gear to strike bottom. The damage has cost the government about $591,668, a figure likely to increase by another $768,925, the complaint states.
