Tugboat deck hand crushed by barges on Alaska river

(BRISTOL BAY, Alaska) — A deck hand with Alaska Marine Lines died this week on the Naknek River while trying to unshackle a mooring line. Spencer Vaughn Brewer, 20, of Seattle, was crushed between two barges, KDLG radio news reported.

Brewer and another deck hand were working from a smaller vessel to unshackle a barge mooring line from a buoy. Brewer was knocked into the water and resurfaced between the two barges, the station reported.

Although he attempted to climb out and then swim under one of the barges as they were pushed together, his PFD became stuck and he was unable to escape. His body floated downriver, and first responders could not revive him.
