Sternwheeler runs aground, damages paddle in Columbia River

(CASCADE LOCKS, Ore.) — A sternwheeler ran aground in the Columbia River, damaging its paddle, television station KPTV reported. The steering mechanism aboard the Steamer Columbia locked up, and the vessel was caught in a swift current and struck rocks near Bonneville Dam. The vessel, which was headed for the inaugural Great Steamboat Race, needed to be towed, causing organizers to suspend the river’s first steamboat race in 56 years.
