Ship operators challenge Fla. harbor pilots’ rates, hiring (PHOTO)

(PORT CANAVERAL, Fla.) — Cruise and cargo ship operators in Florida are challenging their long-time relationship with harbor pilots, the Florida Today newspaper reported. Ship organizations disagree with the hiring practices and high rates charged by the pilot associations. They say technology has reduced the need for pilotage services, so the high rates are no longer justified and ships should have more choices in whom they hire to guide them into port.
