Shell plans return to offshore Alaska in 2014 with upgraded drillship

(THE HAGUE, Netherlands) — Royal Dutch Shell plans to resume offshore oil exploration in Alaska's Chukchi Sea next year with an upgraded drillship, Reuters reported. Noble Discoverer, undergoing maintenance and upgrades in South Korea, would have a containment dome on standby in case of spills. Transocean's Polar Pioneer would provide backup, replacing Shell's Kulluk, a drillship that ran aground while under tow off Alaska in January.
