Houston Pilots, shipping companies face off over rate increase

(HOUSTON) — Houston Ship Channel pilots have requested a 3.5 percent tariff increase in 2014, a move that is not sitting well with shipping companies, the Houston Business Journal reported. The pilots say the increase is needed to maintain high standards of safety in the port, the nation's busiest. Opponents say that if the increase goes through, the port could be at a competitive disadvantage and could lose business.
