(WASHINGTON) — The U.S. government on Monday gave Shell the final permit it needs to drill for oil in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska’s northwest coast, The Seattle Times reported. The Interior Department originally restricted Shell to drilling only the top sections of two wells because it lacked a capping stack that was aboard M/V Fennica, which had been diverted to Oregon for repairs. The icebreaker is now in the Arctic with the emergency well shutdown device.
