Scientists to lobby for ship speed limits to protect whales off Calif.

(SANTA CRUZ ISLAND, Calif.) — California scientists are planning to lobby for new ship speed restrictions to protect whales in Santa Barbara Channel, the Web site Examiner.com reported. One idea is to impose a speed limit of 10 knots, versus the usual speed of 23 to 25 knots, in the area when whales are present. AIS data show that at least 16containerships per day sail in the channel.
