San Jacinto College sponsoring maritime youth expo

The following is the text of a news release from San Jacinto College:

(PASADENA, Texas) — San Jacinto College will sponsor the 2014 Maritime and Logistics Youth Expo on Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Port of Houston Authority's Bayport Cruise Terminal.

This annual event for high school students will feature presentations by mariners on the topics of towboats, harbor tugs and barges. Students will learn about maritime salvage and watch the use of equipment. They will learn how to tie knots, throw heaving line, and about firefighting. U.S. Coast Guard helicopters and small boats will give demonstrations.

Representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, Texas Parks & Wildlife, Texas General Land Office, Port of Houston Authority, Texas Southern University, Texas A&M University at Galveston, San Jacinto College and Houston Community College Southeast will talk to participants about maritime training and career opportunities. Event sponsors include the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Harris County Precinct 2, San Jacinto College, Houston Pilots, and the Port of Houston Authority.

The 2014 Maritime and Logistics Youth Expo will take place from 9 a.m. to noon.
