(WASHINGTON) — A recent incident on a small passenger vessel caused by a malfunction in its throttle power head resulted in a loss of propulsion. An investigation revealed that the throttle had been recalled due to a high risk of intermittent failure.
Affected throttles
Marine engine throttles with part numbers 5563449, 5563448 and 5563447 are affected. These throttles were sold individually or installed in specific Cummins B, C, L, and M marine engines. A list of engine serial numbers (ESN) in included below to help identify engines that are potentially affected.
The hazards to consumers
If the throttle fails, it may become unresponsive, causing the vessel to remain in gear with the propeller turning when neutral is desired, or preventing the engines from restarting. The potential throttle failures increase the risk of personal injury or property damage.
Recommended actions for consumers
Verify engine serial number and throttle part number against the provided list. Contact your nearest Cummins distributor or dealer to schedule an inspection and any necessary throttle replacement at no cost. Until the recall process is complete, advise vessel operators to exercise extra caution, especially during docking or when bystanders are near the propeller.
The U.S. Coast Guard strongly recommends that vessel owners and operators:
• Ensure throttles are checked to determine if they are affected by this recall.
• Inform vessel captains and crew about the associated risks.
• Coordinate with local Cummins dealers for and needed repairs or replacements as soon as possible.
Coast Guard marine inspectors should remain vigilant about these issues and discuss necessary corrective actions with vessel owners and operators.
