Rusted stern tube caused fuel leak from EPA research ship

(NORFOLK, Va.) — The 1,700-gallon diesel spill from an Environmental Protection Agency research ship was caused by a rusted cooling pipe, the Virginian-Pilot newspaper reported. Investigators discovered that the broken stern tube had allowed the fuel to leak out instead of its normal job of allowing seawater in. The decommissioned vessel Rude was docked in the Elizabeth River when the leak occurred.
