Minnesota approves toughest ballast-water treatment rules

(DULUTH, Minn.) — State officials in Minnesota have approved a plan to require vessels on Lake Superior to treat ballast water to thwart the introduction of invasive species, the Duluth News Tribune reported. The rules won’t go into effect until 2016. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s rules are now the toughest on the Great Lakes.
