Rock removal resumes as Mississippi River drops

(BELLEVILLE, Ill.) — With the level of the Mississippi River dropping, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began removing rocks Tuesday in an effort to keep the river open to barge traffic through the winter, the Belleville News-Democrat reported. Army Corps contractors will remove about 2,800 cubic yards of rock during the next several months near Thebes and Grand Tower, Ill., roughly 100 miles south of St. Louis. The river is projected to fall to more than 3 feet below normal in the next week.
