(BOSTON) — Massachusetts lawmakers have petitioned the U.S. Coast Guard for mandatory tugboat escorts of vessels carrying hazardous materials, including oil, through Buzzards Bay, the Cape Cod Times reported. The letter, signed by U.S. Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Edward Markey and U.S. Rep. William Keating, comes as the Coast Guard considers changes to special Buzzards Bay restrictions. Regulations currently require escorts for single-hull barges regardless of the conditions, but double-hull barges are not addressed.
