(NEW YORK) — The $5 billion expansion of the Panama Canal could boost U.S. shipyards by increasing the demand for smaller "shuttle" vessels to serve the U.S. East Coast, the president of the Shipbuilders Council of America told International Business Times. Matt Paxton said the larger container ships that previously couldn't traverse the canal may have difficulty docking in U.S. ports because the infrastructure was not built to handle them.
