Ottawa faces tricky choices in awarding $35B in shipbuilding deals

(OTTAWA) — Prime Minister Harper likely will be forced to alienate one Canadian region when the government begins awarding CAD 35 billion in shipbuilding contracts, the Globe and Mail newspaper of Toronto reported. Two general contractors will be awarded major work, but Canada has three shipbuilding regions: the Maritimes, Quebec and British Columbia. The major contenders are Irving Shipbuilding Inc. in Halifax, Davie Yards of Lévis, Quebec and Washington Marine Group’s Vancouver Shipyards.
