Maine Maritime using firsthand accounts to teach about piracy

(CASTINE, Maine) — Maine Maritime Academy is using firsthand accounts of pirate encounters to teach cadets how to keep vessels secure, the Bangor Daily News reported. Instructors’ personal clashes with pirates in the Gulf of Aden and Malacca Strait illustrate the fact that a variety of vessels can be targets. Lights, water hoses, high speeds and loud directional acoustic devices can thwart pirate boardings.
