Maine fireboat holed after striking ledge during rescue (PHOTO)

(PORTLAND, Maine) — The city of Portland’s new fireboat was seriously damaged when it struck a submerged ledge during an emergency response, the Portland Press Herald newspaper reported. The propeller, shaft and rudder need to be repaired, and a softball-sized hole was pushed into the hull. The fire chief said he wants the vessel repaired within a month, and a recently retired fireboat will operate temporarily in its place.
