Mass. lawmakers urge Coast Guard not to challenge tug-escort rule

(WASHINGTON) — Members of Congress from Massachusetts are asking the Coast Guard not to challenge the state’s new law that requires tugboat escorts for fuel shipments in Buzzards Bay, the Cape Cod Times newspaper reported. The law, which also requires that state pilots accompany the vessels, is designed to reduce the risk of oil spills in the waterway. The Coast Guard had encouraged the governor to veto the law.
