(MILWAUKEE, Wis.) — Lakers may be exempted from federal rules requiring ships to use cleaner fuel, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. The Lake Carriers’ Association says such regulation would discriminate against Great Lakes vessels because they are always within 200 miles from land, forcing them always to use low-sulfur fuel. Democratic U.S. Rep. David Obey is writing legislation that would spare lakers from the strictest requirements.
