Illinois towing industry glad House voted not to close canal locks

(LEMONT, Ill.) — Illinois towing companies are pleased that a bid to close local locks has failed in Congress, the Lemont Reporter newspaper and GateHouse News Service reported. An amendment that would have shuttered locks on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal was defeated last week in the House of Representatives. American Waterways Operators and local towboat companies said such a move, which was intended to create a barrier to protect the Great Lakes from Asian carp, would cost too many jobs.
