Freighter strikes Coast Guard buoy tender in Lake Michigan

(PORT HURON, Mich.) — The Coast Guard cutter Hollyhock was hit by a freighter Sunday morning in Lake Michigan as the cutter was breaking ice, The Times Herald reported. A Coast Guard spokesman said Hollyhock, a buoy tender homeported in Port Huron, was struck in the stern by the 1,004-foot Mesabi Miner after hitting a hard spot in the ice. Hollyhock sustained significant damage to its stern and fantail while Mesabi Miner sustained damage to its bow.
