Foss: Tug captain ran barge aground intentionally to prevent sinking

(SAN FRANCISCO) — Foss Maritime said a tugboat captain ran a barge aground intentional to prevent a potentially large environmental emergency, the San Francisco Examiner reported. The 230-foot barge was carrying a heavy load of sand when it began taking on water near a San Francisco yacht club. A crane barge lightered the cargo to another barge, and the damaged vessel was towed to an Oakland yard.
