EPA pushes for 200-mile ‘clean-air buffer zone’ rule for ships

(LONG BEACH, Calif.) — The Environmental Protection Agency held a meeting in Long Beach to advocate for a new 200-mile ‘clean-air buffer zone,’ The Press-Telegram newspaper reported. In the buffer area, ships would be required to use diesel fuel with a sulfur content that is no higher than 1,000 parts per million. The EPA plans to establish the rule through an international treaty in October.
