Eastern to complete two MPSVs for Hornbeck Offshore

(PANAMA CITY, Fla.) — Eastern Shipbuilding Group has signed a contract with Zurich American Insurance Co. to complete construction of two ultra-high-spec 400 class multi-purpose support vessels (MPSVs) for Hornbeck Offshore Services (HOS). This project will be executed at Eastern’s shipbuilding facilities in Allanton and Port St. Joe, Fla., with anticipated delivery dates set for 2025.

“We are delighted to be entrusted with the completion of these highly capable vessels for our esteemed partners at Hornbeck,” said Joey D’Isernia, chairman and CEO of Eastern Shipbuilding Group. “Our experienced shipbuilding team is poised to timely deliver these critical MPSVs to the market.”

Over 10 years ago, the project was initially entrusted to a different shipyard, which encountered significant design and production challenges during the build, eventually ending in disputes and litigation. Eastern has rescued several faltering programs in its history. Drawing upon its expertise, Eastern has successfully guided numerous clients in reviving shipbuilding initiatives that veered off course.

The two Jones Act-qualified MPSVs will stand as cornerstones in the U.S.-flagged fleet, equipped with cutting-edge features. HOS Warhorse and HOS Wild Horse will boast two large, heave-compensated cranes, two remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), a spacious moonpool, and accommodations for 102 personnel.

In parallel, Eastern Shipbuilding Group is pioneering the conversion of the first-of-its-kind service operation vessel (SOV) for HOS, named HOS Rocinante. The vessel is a dual-service SOV/flotel tailored to serve the emerging demand of the U.S. offshore wind market and the ongoing demand of the petro-energy flotel market. This groundbreaking vessel is scheduled for delivery in the spring of 2025.
