Drones at sea: Rolls-Royce designing crewless cargo ships

(ALESUND, Norway) — Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC is designing unmanned cargo ships that would be safer, cheaper and less polluting for the global $375 billion shipping industry, Bloomberg News reported. Rolls-Royce’s Blue Ocean development team has set up a virtual-reality prototype that simulates 360-degree views from a vessel’s bridge. Eventually, captains on land will use similar control centers to command hundreds of crewless ships, the company says.
