IMO workshop targets safe ship operations in Arctic

The following is the text of a news release from the International Maritime Organization:

(LONDON) — The "Workshop on Safe Ship Operations in the Arctic Ocean", held in February 2014, was organized in collaboration with two projects: the Arctic Options: Holistic Integration for Arctic Coastal-Marine Sustainability Project, funded by the National Science Foundation (United States), and the Arctic Climate Change, Economy and Society (ACCESS) Project, funded by the European Commission.

The workshop took place on 28 February 2014 at IMO Headquarters in London and provided a forum for exploratory discussion of issues arising from the two above-mentioned projects, with particular reference to conditions in the Arctic, as IMO moves towards the finalization of the Polar Code. Participants  included those from IMO Member States, as well as from industry, policy, science and the community of Arctic residents.
