(MAYPORT, Fla.) — The U.S. Coast Guard responded to a fire aboard a dredging vessel Saturday that left one crewmember with serious injuries.
At about 3:30 p.m., Coast Guard Station Mayport received notification that an engine room fire had occurred aboard the 340-foot Stuyvesant near the entrance to the St. Johns River. Small boat crews from Station Mayport responded, as did the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and the St. Johns Bar Pilots Association.
The fire was quickly extinguished. A Coast Guard boat crew transported the injured crewmember to an emergency response unit on shore. The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the fire.
Stuyvesant’s Coast Guard inspection record shows a number of fire safety issues since 2019 that were subsequently resolved.
