Court awards $1.25M to family of sailor killed in barge collision

(JAMESTOWN, Va.) — A federal court has awarded $1.25 million to the family of a Navy seaman who was killed when his inflatable struck a barge in the James River in 2007, the Virginian-Pilot newspaper reported. The deceased fell off the vessel and was caught in the propeller of the tugboat William E. Poole, which was towing the barges. The inflatable was traveling at 25 knots when the collision occurred.
