Coast Guard’s Allen: Fighting piracy requires better legal agreements

(WASHINGTON) — The successful rescue of the captive Maersk Alabama captain from Somali pirates has been followed by several calls to fight the Gulf of Aden piracy problem more aggressively, Reuters reported. The commandant of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy calls for arming crews and increasing naval patrols. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad Allen says a more important tool would be a clearer international agreement that would provide strong assurances that the pirates would be be tried in a court.
