Coast Guard takes steps to make Mississippi River navigation safer

(NEW ORLEANS) — In the aftermath of serious casualties in recent years, the Coast Guard has made an effort to make commercial vessels in the Mississippi River safer, Louisiana Weekly newspaper reported. The Coast Guard conducted spot checks in Operation Big Tow to ensure that towboat crews were properly licensed. The Towing Vessel National Center of Expertise has also opened, among others.
