The following is the text of a news release from the U.S. Coast Guard:
(SAVANNAH, Ga.) — A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Savannah medically evacuated a mariner Friday morning 12 miles east of Savannah.
Watch standers in the Coast Guard Sector Charleston command center were notified of the request by the vessel’s master at 3:38 a.m. The report stated a crewmember from the motor vessel Hanjin Rio de Janeiro was suffering from internal injuries. A Coast Guard flight surgeon was briefed on the situation and he recommended the patient be taken off the vessel.
A crew aboard a 29-foot response boat-small from Coast Guard Station Tybee Island was launched along with an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Savannah.
The helicopter crew arrived on scene at approximately 8 a.m. and safely hoisted the 52-year-old man from the 856-foot container vessel.
The patient was then delivered to Memorial Regional Hospital in Savannah where he was reported to be in fair condition.
