(TROY, N.Y.) — Cargo barges are becoming more common on New York's 524-mile canal system, with tonnage more than doubling last year from 2012, the Times Union reported. The nearly 100,000 tons of cargo shipped in 2013 was the most in 20 years. One of the largest shippers using the waterways is NYS Marine Highway Transportation Co., which last year moved grain from Canada across Lake Ontario and through the Oswego and Erie canals.
